Applying for a Visa in Hong Kong

Schengen Visa

A visa issued by any Schengen member country allows free travel across the borders between and/or among Schengen countries unless otherwise stated in the visa. Schengen countries include Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
The maximum period of stay allowed is 90 days within six months, with one or multiple entries, provided no employment is taken.
The Competent Visa Office:The consulate general of the country of your main destination should issue your visa. If you visit more than one Schengen country and the main destination cannot be determined, please submit your application at the consulate general of the country of first entry.
Please note that the German Consulate also issues visas on behalf of Portugal and Slovenia, which are no longer represented in Hong Kong. Therefore, if you are a Hong Kong resident and your main destination is Portugal or Slovenia, you may apply for a Tourist Visa or a Business Visa at the German Consulate. For other types of visas, please contact the Consulate General of Portugal in Macau or the Embassy of Slovenia in Beijing respectively.
Only Hong Kong and Macao residents may apply for visas at the German Consulate General in Hong Kong. If you are living in the provinces Guangdong, Fujian or on Hainan, please contact:
Visa ApplicationThe completed application form along with two recent passport photographs that can support biometric checks must be signed and submitted in person. 
For documents that must be submitted with application forms, please refer to the correspondent list of requirements for each visa category below.
Please note that all documents must be declared genuine before submission (see "Declaration of genuineness of documents submitted" below).
Processing TimeShort stay visas shall typically be processed in 3 to 10 working days, depending on the applicant's nationality.
Visa FeesThe fee for a Schengen visa is EUR 60.00 payable in HKD and must be settled upon application. Fees are non-refundable. Payments must be made in cash.
Holders of a Hong Kong S.A.R. passport, BN(O) passport or Macao S.A.R. passport do not need a visa for Schengen countries up to 90 days in any 6-month period, provided no employment is taken.
Holders of a Document of Identity (DI) are required to have a visa for Schengen countries. Yet, some Schengen countries do not recognise Documents of Identity. Please contact the relevant consulate for further information.

Business or Short-term Training Visa

In addition to the general requirements listed above, the original as well as 1 photocopy of the following documents (Items 2-7) must be provided:
  1. Completed application form and 2 recent passport photographs that can support biometric checks
  2. Passport or travel document, valid for at least 3 months after end of your trip
  3. Hong Kong Stay Permit valid for at least 3 months after the expiry date of the requested Schengen visa (if you do not have a permanent HKID card)
  4. Round-trip airline ticket or proof of confirmed flight reservations
  5. Company guarantee letter with bank endorsement
  6. Invitation from your business partner in Germany
  7. Proof of travel medical insurance with a minimum coverage of 30,000 Euros which is valid in all Schengen member countries for the duration of your stay
All documents must be presented in English or German.
Applicants may be required to provide additional documents in individual cases.

Tourist Visa

In addition to the general requirements listed above, the original as well as 1 photocopy of the following documents (Items 2-9) must be provided:
  1. Completed application form and 2 recent passport photographs that can support biometric checks
  2. Passport or travel document, valid for at least 3 months after end of your trip
  3. Hong Kong Stay Permit valid for at least 3 months after the expiry date of the requested Schengen visa (if you do not have a permanent HKID card)
  4. Round-trip airline ticket or proof of confirmed flight reservations 
  5. Proof of your financial circumstances (such as a recent bank passbook, a recent bank statement or fixed deposit statement) 
  6. a) Employer's leave letter endorsed by employer's bank (if applicable)
    b) Student identification card (if applicable) 
  7. Confirmed hotel booking (Hotel voucher)
    or
    Letter of invitation of the person you are visiting in the Schengen area. A formal sponsorship letter may be requested.
  8. Proof of travel medical insurance with a minimum coverage of 30,000 Euros which is valid in all Schengen member countries for the duration of your stay
  9. Minor applicants must present their birth certificates and have the written consent of their parents/legal guardians. 
All documents must be presented in English or German.
Further documents may be requested in individual cases.

Airport Transit Visa

German National Visa

As a rule, all foreigners require visas for stays of more than three months or stays leading to the holder taking up gainful employment. Not subject to this requirement are citizens of the EU, the EEC countries and of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Switzerland and the United States of America, who may obtain any residence permit that may be required after entering Germany. Citizens of all other countries who intend to come to Germany for such a stay must apply for visas before arriving in the country. Visa applications must be approved by the relevant aliens authority in Germany, i.e. the aliens authority in the place where the applicant intends to take up residence.
Please note that now a new German law is in effect which requires that any person wishing to join his/her spouse to reside in Germany should have attained a certain level of German language proficiency before he/she is issued with a visa. As of October 8th 2007, the minimum German language level required is at Level A1 under the European Framework of Reference for Languages. Visa Application
The application must be submitted in person. For documents that must be submitted with application forms, please see list of requirements for each visa category below.
Visa Fees
The current fee for a German national visa is 60 Euros. Please note that visa fees payable in HKD will have to be settled in cash upon application and are non-refundable.
Visa Office Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Student Visa

There are three different types of visas for students:
  1. Study Applicant's Visa - for those who have applied for a course at a university (or equivalent) in Germany but have not yet had a reply. This visa is valid for 3 months only and can be converted into a full visa for study purposes after you have been admitted to a higher education institution. You must apply for the Studienbewerbervisa prior to your departure.  Tourist Visas may not be modified after arrival in Germany.
  2. Student Visa - for those who have applied for a course at a university and have received an acknowledgement of their application.
  3. Language Course Visa - for those only wanting to do a language course in Germany. NB: A Language Course Visa cannot be converted into a Study Applicant's Visa or Student Visa in Germany. So if you want to do a course at a German university immediately after your language course, apply now for a Study Applicant's Visa or a Student Visa (these cover both the language course and the university course). Otherwise you will have to come back to Hong Kong after the language course is finished and apply again.
In addition to the general requirements, the originals as well as 2 photocopies of the following documents (Items 2-8) must be provided :
  1. Two completed application forms and 3 recent passport photographs that can support biometric checks
  2. Passport or travel document, valid for at least 6 months
  3. Letter of admission from a German university, Confirmation of language class registration 
  4. Certificates of school examinations qualifying you to study at a university (or equivalent) in Germany
  5. Certificates of university examinations, Student Identification Card etc. (if applicable) 
  6. Certificates showing your level of ability in German or confirmation that you have registered for an intensive German language course in Germany (at least 20 hours a week). Please note that proof of German language proficiency is required if course language (even partly) is German
  7. Financial proof for your entire period of studies in Germany, such as your scholarship award, a recent bank book, a recent bank statement or fixed deposit statement, financial guarantee from parents, supported by appropriate proof or an official sponsorship letter "Verpflichtungserklärung" (please reckon expenses of € 659 per month) 
  8. Employer's leave letter (if applicable) 
  9. Proof of health insurance 
  10. Minor applicants must present their birth certificates and have the written consent of their parents/legal guardians.
  11. If you intend to stay in Germany for more than 12 months, you will be requested to provide a Certificate of No Criminal Conviction issued by the Hong Kong Police. This Consulate General will support your application for such a Certificate by issuing a request to the Hong Kong Police.
All documents must be presented in English or German. Further documents may be requested in individual cases.
Processing Time: Student visas shall be processed in 4 to 6 weeks.

Visas for Guest Scientists or Visiting Scholars

To apply for a visa to conduct research or post-doctoral studies in Germany for more than 90 days, please submit the following documents in original and two photocopies:
  • Completed application form and 3 recent passport photographs that can support biometric check
  • Passport or travel document, valid for at least 6 months
  • Invitation letter from the German university or research organisation with details regarding length of stay and activity to be pursued
  • Accompanying letter of the Hong Kong organisation/employer or academic qualifications
  • Scholarship/fellowship award letter (if applicable) or financial proof for your entire stay in Germany, such as your scholarship award, a recent bank passbook, a recent bank statement or fixed deposit statement (please reckon expenses of € 643 per month)
  • If you intend to stay in Germany for more than 12 months, you will be requested to provide a Certificate of No Criminal Conviction issued by the Hong Kong Police. This Consulate General will support your application for such a Certificate by issuing a request to the Hong Kong Police.
All documents must be presented in English or German. Further documents may be requested in individual cases.
If you are planning a short stay of up to 90 days, please submit one short-term visa application form and one set of documents accordingly, plus proof of valid medical insurance.
Applicants will have to apply in person.
If your family is accompanying you, the same requirements will be applicable to them. Proof of family relation (birth or marriage certificate) must be submitted.
Processing Time: Applications for Visas for Guest Scientists or Visiting Scholars shall be processed in three working days.

Long Term or Work Visas

In addition to the general requirements listed above, the originals as well as 2 photocopies of the following documents (Items 2-7) must be provided :
  1. Two completed application forms and 3 recent passport photographs that can support biometric checks.
  2. Your passport or travel document valid for at least 3 months after end of your trip. Other than Hongkong passport holders, please provide your Hongkong stay permit.
  3. If you wish to take up any kind of employment in Germany, irrespective of the intended duration of your stay, please provide your work contract. If you wish to take up employment as a cook in Germany, please provide a proof for your minimum 3 year formal training including a successful examination or a proof of at least 6 years working experience as a cook.
  4. If you wish to take up a training of longer than 3 months in Germany, please provide your training program and a letter of invitation from the German company.
  5. If you wish to join your spouse presently residing in Germany, please provide your marriage certificate, a copy of the person’s residence permit and proof of means of subsitence. If a minor child wishes to join its parents to reside in Germany, please provide the birth certificate.
  6. If you wish to get married in Germany, please provide a letter of invitation of your fiancé/fiancée stating the address where you want to reside together, a copy of the person’s residence permit/German passport and proof of means of subsistence.
  7. If you intend to stay in Germany for more than 12 months, you will be requested to provide a Certificate of No Criminal Conviction issued by the Hong Kong Police. This Consulate General will support your application for such a Certificate by issuing a request to the Hong Kong Police.
  8.
